Recently, Kent Mahoney, Executive Vice President of North America, spoke with Seth Cysewski on the Scaling Sustainability podcast to discuss the current challenges businesses face to meet their decarbonization targets and pledges, and the top priorities businesses should be looking at right now.
They discussed procurement’s central role in sustainability efforts. Many businesses are now realizing that a sustainable supply chain is no longer a ‘nice to have’ as pressure from investors, regulators, customers, and profitability are forcing many organizations’ hands in setting carbon reduction targets.
For the vast majority of organizations, 90% of CO2 emissions lies in what’s known as Scope 3 – the value chain, loosely described as how something is made, used and disposed of. This means that successful and profitable decarbonization means working with suppliers, and procurement needs to play a critical role in managing the decarbonization process across that external supply base.
